Clear Skin is a Science. Why Your Skincare (+ Bed Sheets) Matter…

As most of you probably know, I am a Director with Beautycounter and a firm believer that using skincare and makeup made with cleaner, safer ingredients makes an incredible difference for your skin. As a teenager (up until the birth of my daughter) I struggled with acne and tried all the popular acne lines out there (completely naive and clueless about ingredient safety) with little to no real long term solution.

When I was introduced to Beautycounter, I honestly didn’t have high expectations as far as it clearing my skin but since I was looking for something safer to use while breastfeeding, I decided to give it a whirl! Boy, was my skin happy to meet the Charcoal Cleansing Bar (activated charcoal helps pull out impurities from skin) and Balancing Facial Oil. I know what you’re thinking, “Oil for oily skin?” but our skin actually overproduces oils when our skin is overdried from harsh acne products that strip all our natural oils away. This amazing facial oil restores balance with softening meadowfoam seed , while wild chamomile calms and soothes skin. These two products gave me hope and eventually Beautycounter released the Countercontrol Collection (a powerful regimen for oily and blemish-prone skin that mattifies and clears without dryness and irritation) which is what I currently use.

I have also recently added our breakthrough new anti-aging Countertime Collection in the evening since I’m in the lucky group with acne prone and aging skin. What I LOVE is that the superstar plant-derived ingredient, Bakuchiol (performs like Retinol without the skin irritation and other side effects) also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which makes it a great fit for all skin types! Okay, so you’re probably wondering what your bed sheets have to do with your skin, right? Well, once you finish your nightly skincare routine (Cleanse, Prep, Treat + Protect) you don’t want to lay your face down on a bacterial haven… Unless you wash your sheets daily, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria that leads to breakouts. Gross, right? Well, upon some searching (or most likely an instagram ad) I discovered this brand of organic cotten sheets (Silvon) that are naturally antimicrobial. Similar to Norwex, they are woven with pure silver to eliminate bacteria and provide a clean sleep environment night after night.

Silvon Sheets

Here is a bit about how this works:

Our fabrics are woven with silver-coated threads that naturally resist bacterial growth. We use pure silver because we don’t believe in harsh chemical treatments.

1. The Science

Silver carries a naturally positive charge and bacteria carries a negative charge. These opposing charges are what makes silver and bacteria attracted to each other. Silver then breaks bacteria’s cell wall and destroys it before it has a chance to reproduce. And since we weave our silver directly into our fabric, its natural antimicrobial properties never lose potency.

2. Tested and proven

We take testing seriously. Our technology has been verified by more than a decade of testing at research institutions including Pennsylvania State University and Cornell University. Silvon is tested in accordance with the highest antimicrobial standards (ASTM E2149) and multiple independent studies have also shown a 99% reduction in acne-causing bacteria. (Fun fact: NASA also uses this technology in some of their space suits!)

And if the antimicrobial properties aren’t enough, you can rest assured that all of our Materials and partners are Fair Trade Certified and have earned the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®—which means they support human ecology through bio-compatibility and the absence of harmful substances in the manufacturing process.

Added bonus is that these sheets are also made from organic cotton that’s sustainably sourced!
